Some students may have used take-home exams previously, but many students will find the new online exam system unfamiliar and strange. The final exam I took in my third year was an entirely new experience. It taught a lot to me about discipline and confidence in studying.

The 3rdApril arrived, which was also the day that my exam timetable went public. I did not know what I was in for this year. I received my one exam on Thursday 7th, at 10am. It would take 23 hours. That was a strange thing. I was given 23 hours to complete and submit the assessment to my department via Blackboard. My first instinct was panic. How was I supposed do it? It would take me weeks to compose an essay I was happy about. Here are the steps I took to conquer my exam anxiety, and pass the assessment on time.

I had to remember that this was an essay. Sometimes it is difficult to give yourself enough time for essay-writing. Essay-writing allows you more freedom, which can create the illusion that the quality of your coursework will be the same. The fact is that this is an examination and the marking agent knows it. You won't be required to write an answer if it is not possible to do so in the exam room. This will be something you should learn as you prepare. Understanding the limits of time is key. Don't try to achieve more than you can handle.

The exam rubric is another tip that can be very useful especially for essay-based exams. This would apply to all years, but your online exam may use a different rubric. Is there a word limit? Are there any changes in the number and type of questions that must be answered? I found it a relief that my exam had a minimum word count of 1,000 words per essay. This allowed me the freedom to plan my essays using a simple and achievable framework. It also helped calm some anxiety about having to write pages upon hours.

I knew that the exam would be open book when revising. This meant that I could access all the resources that I needed when I was taking the exam. This was something I took into account as I prepared my notes to make them easy to refer back to when I needed them. I also made bookmarks of useful websites and essays on Chrome so that I could quickly access them during my 23 hours exam period.
